Friendly Tips for Staying Cool During the Summer
Tips for Staying Cool During the Summer in Wisconsin
Howdy, Neighbors! Summer is on the horizon, which means now is the perfect time to set up your patio furniture, test out your central air conditioner, and start planning your outdoor activities for the warmer months that lay ahead!
To stay cool while you enjoy your summer both indoors and outdoors, here are some helpful tips from your neighbors at Frasier’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. to keep nearby:
Adjust Your Ceiling Fan
If you have a ceiling fan (or a few) installed in your cabin, there’s a chance they’re still rotating in a clockwise direction. While this is ideal for winter (since it will help eliminate a chill), you’ll want to switch the direction of your fan’s blade rotation during the summertime.
To help keep cool, turn your ceiling fan off and set it to run in a counterclockwise direction. Once the fan is turned back on, you’ll notice a nice, cool difference in the room.
Open the Windows on Cooler Nights
Are you thinking about giving your hardworking air conditioner a much-needed break? If so, consider opening up your windows on a cool summer night. Doing so will not only help you cut back on your central air conditioner’s energy consumption, but you’ll still feel refreshed with some help from mother nature’s gentle breeze.
Consider Replacing Your Light Bulbs
Neighbor, do you have incandescent light bulbs in your cabin? If so, we hate to break it to you, but those can use much more energy during the hottest days of the year — about up to 90 percent. To help keep your cabin cool, as well as make a conscious effort to conserve energy, consider replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
Keep Window Treatments Shut During the Day
If there are rooms in your cabin that are prone to getting heavily hit with the sun’s rays during the day, consider keeping the window treatments closed in those spaces. The reason why is because when the sunlight beams through your windows, it will heat the room — almost like a greenhouse.
When this happens, there’s a chance that your central air conditioning system will continuously stay on while trying to combat the heat. If you’re looking to take things up a notch, consider investing in blackout curtains or shades for those sunnier rooms — they’ll make all the difference!
Wear Light Colored Clothing
When you’re spending a day out on the lake kayaking or fishing, you’ll want to make sure that you’re wearing summer-friendly colors — rather than those you might wear during the winter. From light shades of blue to yellow and pink, these colors won’t absorb the heat — which means you’ll be as comfortable as can be when enjoying the great outdoors!
Make Sure to Stay Hydrated
Whether you’re lying by the lake or lounging in the cabin, make sure to stay hydrated. Doing this will help regulate your core body temperature and will help you feel cool and comfortable on the hottest of summer days.
Also, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated (about 6 to 8 glasses of water a day) — because consuming sugary beverages (such as many popular sports drinks) can make you feel anything less than comfortable when the sun’s rays are at their most powerful.
Always Have Summer Foods On-Deck
Speaking of staying hydrated, if you’re looking to pack the cooler for a day on the boat, consider adding in a hearty helping of summer foods! Since about 20% of our fluid intake comes from food, sweet treats like watermelon to strawberries will be the best choice! Not only do these fan favorites taste delicious on a hot summer day, but they’ll keep you hydrated for a long, fun day!
